Frequently Asked Questions
What is genetic counseling?
In addition to evaluating a condition, genetic testing has its own pros and cons. Genetic counseling is a service where a trained geneticist helps you understand these in addition to the genetic conditions, test results, risks, and options for you and your family. It provides guidance on how genetics may affect health and reproductive decisions, and also helps with clearing your queries.
What does a genetic consultation involve?
A genetic consultation typically involves a detailed discussion of your family history, medical background, and any symptoms or concerns. The geneticist will aslo examine you and go through the records, if needed. Based on this information, genetic tests may be recommended.
What types of genetic tests are available?
We offer a wide range of genetic tests, including tests for hereditary cancers, genetic diseases in children and adults, reproductive genetic tests, and prenatal genetic testing. Most genetic tests available around the world have been made accessible at our center.
Are genetic tests covered by insurance?
It depends on the insurance company, the plan you have chosen, the role of testing in care and admission status. Many health insurance policies cover genetic testing if it is medically necessary or if admitted. It’s best to check with your insurer for specific details regarding your plan.
How can I schedule a genetic consultation with Dr. Roshan Daniel?
You can schedule an appointment by calling the hospital’s appointment line or booking a teleconsultation through our website. Either will connect you to the KIMSHealth hospital appointment or booking section.
What should I expect during a genetic test?
Genetic tests usually involve providing a sample of blood, saliva, or tissue. At our center, we almost always use a blood sample. The procedure is simple and non-invasive, and results typically take a few weeks to be processed.
How long does it take to get genetic test results?
Genetic test results typically take 1–4 weeks, depending on the complexity of the test and the type of condition being tested.
Can I have genetic testing done without a family history of genetic conditions?
Yes, even without a family history, genetic testing can be useful for identifying hidden genetic conditions or determining your risk for certain diseases based on your lifestyle or other factors. Usually we can perform couple carrier screen, pharmacogenomic testing and wellness genomics testsin such conditions.
Do I need a referral to see a geneticist?
At our center, we do not mandate the need for referral. If you think you might need a consultation, you are welcome to book an appointment with us.
